The UK Government website states that “all suppliers bidding for contracts involving the handling of certain sensitive and personal information [need] to be certified against the Cyber Essentials scheme.”

Cyber security protection
Protection is one of the main reasons why your business should become Cyber Essentials certified.
To gain certification your business must have a set of basic technical controls in place recommended by the scheme to help your organisation protect itself against common online security threats.
These controls can protect your business from up to 80% of such cyber security threats.
Public sector procurement
The Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2019 reaffirms that “cyber attacks are a persistent threat to businesses and charities.”
Government organisations (including the Ministry of Defence) require all suppliers bidding for contracts involving the handling of certain sensitive and personal information to gain Cyber Essentials certification.
The level of certification required varies, and suppliers can choose to gain Cyber Essentials Plus certification should a contract they are bidding for require it.
Cyber Essentials Plus certification includes an additional internal scan and an on-site assessment.

According to the latest Cyber Security Breaches Survey, over half of all businesses (56%, vs 51% in 2018) say they have implemented controls in all the five technical areas listed under the Government’s Cyber Essentials scheme.
